Thailand and Eco-Labelling

Abstract

Eco-labelling, as part of a general movement towards greener markets overseas, is seen in some government and business circles in Thailand as presenting more potential opportunities than barriers to Thai producers. Technical and financial barriers are not generally perceived to be insurmountable in the event that the market gains to be made through this approach are seen as adequate rewards for the capital investments made. Those sectors of the community who are concerned with environmental quality have an even more favourable attitude towards green markets overseas. International concerns for the environment and the emerging markets for cleaner technologies and “greener” products are seen as providing a part of the necessary economic incentive to encourage Thai producers to behave more responsibly with regard to the environmental effects of industrial production. To understand these perspectives, it is necessary to consider the position of the Thai economy and the Thai environment at present.
