Environmental Product Requirements: A New Trade Barrier?

Abstract

In recent years, consumers have seen a growing number of products with labels providing information on environmental aspects. However, often the information provided does not appear well-grounded. To tackle this problem, several countries have taken initiatives to set up official eco-labelling schemes for providing consumers with objective and reliable information on the environmental impact of products. Many schemes analyse the entire life cycle of products, which means that, in the establishment of environmental product requirements, the evaluation covers all stages from raw material via production and use, to the discarded product in the form of waste. Not all labelling systems are equally thorough, though, but the parties involved cooperate worldwide to exchange ideas and experience.
