Abstract

Once the centre of wealthy civilizations spanning trade routes between China and Europe, Central Asia was from the late nineteenth century onwards a remote and semi-closed outpost of the Russian and then Soviet empires. Since 1991 the region has re-emerged as an area of considerable interest given its strategic geographic location and its economic potential. This book assesses the welfare of households in the five independent republics of former Soviet Central Asia and the mechanisms used to support their living standards.
