Welfare State and Development Models

In: Comparative Welfare Systems

Author

Abstract

The crisis of the welfare systems in all European countries has driven scientists (i) to identify the common aspects of these systems from the structural as well as from the functional point of view; (ii) to outline their specificities in view of possible solutions to the most urgent problems. (Archibugi, 1993; Caffè, 1986; Myrdal, 1960). I will discuss some aspects of this elaboration still under development, concerned with (i) the ‘social contract’ and the role of the subjects in the formation of welfare systems; (ii) the methods to identify and classify welfare systems; (iii) the factors of crisis and possibilities of transformation.
