Abstract

Macroeconomic management problems in Eastern Europe are not a new phenomenon. With the fall of the Austrian and Ottoman Empires some 80 years ago, some 13 countries emerged in Eastern Europe that today have become key factors in the (in)stability not only of Europe but of the entire world. After all, the First and Second World Wars were triggered in the region. Now, with the end of Soviet rule, former states are again falling apart and wars are starting all over again.
