Abstract

With the end of the cold war, the role of the United Nations in peacemaking and peace-keeping has increased, but in the social and economic sphere it has been reduced. No longer is an arbiter above the cold-war battleground needed, and many of its functions have been handed over to the World Bank, to NGOs and to bilateral donors.
