Abstract

Many authors in the past have discussed the competitiveness of Japanese firms in manufacturing sectors such as electronics and automobiles. Much of the work has centred on understanding manufacturing processes such as just-in-time and QC circles. Little empirical work, however, has been done on assessing their core competencies. The aim of this paper is to provide some empirical analysis aimed at identifying and measuring core competencies as reflected in technological strengths across major Japanese and European firms engaged in opto-electronics. Having measured and identified core competencies, an attempt is made to analyse how those patterns emerged. The first section discusses the theoretical background, followed by a short account of why opto-electronics was chosen. The main part of this paper presents the empirical methods and findings.
