John Hobson: Admirer and Critic of Thorstein Veblen

Abstract

The British social thinker John Hobson (1858–1940) and the Norwegian-American social scientist Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929) knew each other personally and corresponded (Dorfman 1934 and 1973; Minchinton 1959).1 Veblen cited Hobson extensively in The Theory of Business Enterprise (1904) and Hobson cited Veblen frequently, for example in Work and Wealth (1914), Free-Thought in the Social Sciences (1926a), The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (1926b), and Wealth and Life (1926a). Veblen reviewed Hobson’s Imperialism (1903) and Hobson wrote a book, an article and an obituary on Veblen (1937, 1936 and 1926b).2 They both commented extensively on the political economist Mallock (Veblen 1898; Hobson 1898a), and they both responded to the Utopian socialist Bellamy (Hobson 1898b; Tilman 1985; Edgell and Tilman 1989).
