Abstract

While fairs in Western Europe ceased during the Middle Ages to play a dominant role in trade, Russian fairs, also of early origin, continued to serve a significant function in national commerce until the early years of the twentieth century. As late as the 1860s, fairs accounted for a substantial portion of Russia’s total commodity turnover,1 providing for the basic needs of her populace, uniting remote areas of the country and serving as a market for the products of her industry and agriculture. The reasons for the long-lived importance of these fairs stemmed from economic backwardness.
