Rigidities and Employment in Belgium: An Econometric Analysis by Sectoral Employment Functions

Abstract

As in most industrialised countries, unemployment is at the centre of preoccupations of Belgian authorities. The Belgian rate of unemployment is one of the highest in the EEC. In 1985, it amounted to 11.6 per cent (against an EEC average of 9.9 per cent). Employment policies designed to increase labour-market flexibility are often considered as one of the possible remedies.
