Abstract

In periods of rapid change, writing descriptions of financial institutions and their functions can be especially difficult. This has always been true of specialised financial books but now it is becoming equally true for the more general type of survey. Even within the general format of this present volume, no less than four different cross-currents have recently occurred making generalisations more and more difficult.
