Abstract

This chapter examines the industrial characteristics of direct foreign investment in large private sector manufacturing companies in India. There are two points of interest in this analysis. First, while several recent empirical studies have investigated the determinants of foreign shares of manufacturing industry in the advanced industrial countries,2 and have contributed to the construction and refinement of a useful economic theory of multinational enterprises,3 there is a virtual absence of such studies for developing countries.4 It is possible that the factors affecting foreign entry in industrially backward, technologically unsophisticated and low income markets will not be the same as those in the rich, developed ones. Moreover, the relatively strict controls on foreign entry imposed by most developing host countries and their interventionist trade regimes may render the resulting patterns of foreign presence in manufacturing significantly different.
