Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to breathe life into the economic model (outlined in Chapter 2) by illustrating its application in reference to five economies — to the economies of France, Japan, West Germany, the UK and the USA. For each country some brief introductory comments will be made on recent economic history before going on to reduce each economic system to the same comparative outline country. This procedure will have the advantage of highlighting the comparative differences between the economies under discussion, as well as indicating the broad similarity in economic processes. One of the primary purposes of this book is to explain the success of the expanding economies (such as France, Japan and West Germany) as well as the relative economic failure of the Anglo-Saxon economies (such as the UK and the USA) in terms of a single economic model; this aim is attempted in this chapter.
