Motivational Aspects of Management Control

Abstract

Control is often construed as a process, based on influence, authority and power, in which a person, a group or an organisation intentionally affects what another person, group or organisation will do. Conformity to organisational norms is a normal feature of this type of control (Tannenbaum, 1962). Such a definition of control is too restrictive if we are to do justice to a realistic assessment of management control. This chapter will address itself to an appraisal of management control and its motivational implications.
