Abstract

Medina Polymers Limited is a small company in the plastics and rubber moulding business located at Newport in the Isle of Wight. Under Dennis Welsh, the works manager, it has a total of 13 employees. The company was started by John Torrance in 1972 when he bought out Ray Mouldings (a London-based producer of plastic mouldings) for £20,000 with a year’s work outstanding. John Torrance was already running, a rubber moulding business at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight and he took a lease on a new factory of 3000 sq. feet on a new industrial estate at Newport. He brought the presses and tools from Ray Mouldings down to the Newport site so that he could manage both operations on the island. But running two separate sites was still a strain and in January 1974 he recruited Dennis Welsh by advertising in the local newspaper. Dennis Welsh was 31, had been trained as a toolmaker and later spent time in a large company doing industrial engineering, followed by a year in production management in a small company at Bembridge at the eastern end of the island.
