Linking Manufacturing Policy and Operational Control: Arnold’s Children’s Wear

Abstract

Arnolds make chidren’s clothes selling under the brand names Playtime, Childwrap and Babycare. They were established as a family firm in 1933, expanded rapidly with the post-war growth of the children’s clothing market, and in the mid-sixties were merged into Pratt Morris. At this time Playtime was the largest children’s clothes brand in the U.K., and probably in Europe. They had about 5 per cent of the highly fragmented U.K. market with a turnover of £16m., representing 20 million garments a year. As part of Pratt Morris, Arnolds remained essentially independent with a head office at Stanley, near Durham.
