Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss certain data on movements in output and input in the British economy in the postwar period, viewed in relation to trends over the past hundred years. This work is part of a research project sponsored by the Social Science Research Council of New York on the growth of advanced economies in the post-war period in relation to their historical experience. The part of this project that is concerned with Great Britain is being carried out in Cambridge by C. H. Feinstein, J. Odling-Smee and myself. Our work is still at a relatively early stage, and all the statistics to be quoted in this paper should be regarded as preliminary and subject to revision. Any conclusions to be drawn are still more provisional.
