Vietnam’s Agriculture and Its Prospects to 2000

Abstract

Vietnam has the specific characteristics of an agricultural country, with 80 per cent of the population living in the countryside and 72 per cent of the total workforce participating in agricultural production activities. As a result, Vietnam has, in the past, always put an emphasis on agriculture, considering it to be the most important area of production. Thanks to the renovation policy, Vietnam has, from the status of a rice importer, now not only satisfied the domestic consumption demand but also exports a volume of between 1.5 and 2 million tonnes of rice annually. Some other exported products include coffee, rubber, fruits and vegetables. Vietnam’s agriculture is now being developed intensively under the orientation of diversifying products, fully exploiting the potential and strengths of a tropical monsoon agricultural country.
