The Impact of Import Penetration on Unemployment in UK Manufacturing

Abstract

The relationship between international trade and domestic unemployment has received serious attention only in recent years, partly because of economic recession, triggered by two oil crises (1973 and 1980) and partly because of observed deindustrialization in matured Western economies when, under both circumstances, workers and capitalists alike clamour for protection against import competition. There is an association between depression and deindustrialization as both create unemployment, although the former is cyclical and hence a medium-term phenomenon while the latter is essentially a long-term phenomenon as it involves structural change.
