Abstract

Chapter 3 will discuss the social trends which significantly influence the context of environmental management. Here, it is initially a matter of the increasing importance being attached to environmental protection by the general public. Less emphasis will be placed on the extensive documentation of research results and much more on interpretation of the changes in values, experiences and estimates, and consequent trends which lie behind these research results. Since nature is a ‘collective resource’, the demand for environmental protection is articulated in the first place through the political system. For this reason, the way in which the preferences of citizens are turned into political decisions will then be analysed and the role played by party programmes in this process examined.
