Abstract

Has the notion of a job for life disappeared? Undoubtedly there have been changes in the nature of jobs in Britain since the 1970s. Some commentators have called the changes a revolution, and a casualisation of the labour market (Social Justice Commission report; Hutton, 1995). Others have suggested this characterisation vastly overstates the changes which have taken place (Robinson, 1995); flexible jobs are argued to represent the voluntary preferences of many people. However, there is no doubt that this is a topical issue and on the agenda of politicians who are concerned about the lack of ‘feel-good’ factor in the British electorate.
