Abstract

News is what the news media say it is. The gathering of information and the production and distribution of newspapers is an expensive business, but it can also be very lucrative. The news agencies and the financial press, owned by or wedded to the corporations who control the financial markets, exert a considerable influence on the views and opinions of the public, carrying with it great potentials for useful information but also great danger of abuse.
