Cross-Border Payment Systems and the European Monetary Union

Abstract

Payment systems have undergone profound transformation in recent years. The techniques of payment have been modified, with payment by cards and credit transfers taking a larger share of the total. In addition, with the integration of capital markets and the creation of the European Union (EU) internal market, more and larger payments are passing from one country to another and, hence, from one payment system to another.
