The Best of Both Worlds

Abstract

It was late 1985, and the price of oil had plummeted from $40 a barrel to $10. I had spent the previous three years building up the resources of Wimpey Offshore and Wimpey Engineering to cope with the second wave of North Sea exploration that had dissipated before it became a reality. I found myself with the task that I disliked the most: telling valuable people that they were no longer valuable — in fact, they were dispensable. We mounted a voluntary severance programme, which I suggested should be aimed at all levels to avoid the inevitable concentration at the lower end of the organisation.
