Abstract

The theme proposed by the background chapter is to analyze the successes and failures in the various developing countries and to explain the different outcomes in terms of a complex of variables grouped under the label of social absorption capability. This objective is indeed tremendously ambitious in its scope. Empirical studies have found it difficult to isolate variables that statistically confirm the relevance of popular explanatory variables. (This emerged, for instance, from the chapter presented by L. Summers at the Far East Econometric Society meetings in Seoul, 1991.)
