Abstract

Just a few years ago crisis management was a virtually unknown term. Now it is a PR flavour of the month. Much of this new-found popularity resulted from a wave of highly publicized catastrophes in the late 1980s — Bhopal, Zeebrugge, King’s Cross, Piper Alpha, Lockerbie and the Exxon Valdez — followed by a number of public relations firms cashing in on corporate fear (‘what if it happened to you?…’) and adding “crisis management” to their stable of skills.2
