Abstract

The concept and definition of employment are not unambiguous in the Ethiopian context. Rural employment with peasant farming clearly presents problems. These may be different but no less complex for the urban sector. Those in paid employment and subject to the provisions of the Labour Proclamation 64 of 1975 and those employed in state administration easily fit into the usual definition of employment. There are, however, other types of economic activity which are less straightforward. For example, the 1978 Household Survey in its estimate of urban employment showed the categories listed in Table 8.1.
