Abstract

The existence of a large rural sector, where more than half the population, 51 per cent, is engaged, is a common feature of almost all Arab countries. The magnitude of this sector does, however, differ from one country to another. While in the GCC countries only one-third of the population are engaged in this sector, the rate is more than two-thirds in some LDACs. The existence of this relatively large rural sector has influenced the pace of development in a number of ways.
