Abstract

Outsiders often have a much higher regard for the European Community than those nations that are actually full members. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the case of Cyprus, where there is widespread support for membership, extending to Turkish Cypriots as well as the Greek Cypriot majority. Community membership, it is believed, would bring real economic gains. Few costs are expected, but is such a favourable view of the merits of being part of Europe justified?
