Abstract

A number of recent attempts have been made to encompass significant developments in the world economy, relating to inter-firm agreements, particularly those centred on technological exchange and development. This chapter is an attempt to systematise an approach to such developments which enables rigorous analysis and to make certain distinctions crucial to clarification. The view it takes is that several disparate phenomena are encompassed in extant umbrella concepts and that enlightenment can be achieved by the use of appropriate analytical tools, organising concepts and the judicious use of Occam’s razor.
