New Perspectives for Modernization in Central America

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to challenge the view that the crisis of the 1980s has greatly set back the process of modernising Central America’s economic and political structures and that, in consequence, the outlook for the 1990s is bleak.1 Instead, we argue that the outlook for modernization in the 1990s may well be brighter than at any time in the post-war period.
