The Economic Approach to Conversion (II)

In: Disarming Military Industries

  • Peter Southwood

Abstract

The last and most numerous group of contributors to the literature on the economics of disarmament and conversion are the peace researchers, although eminent economists and writers with a radical labour perspective are also included. The material will be arranged in the following manner: titles prior to 1973 will be assessed first, then Melman’s work which straddles both periods will be examined, finally the remainder of the literature from 1973 onwards will be considered in detail. The objective will be to compare the results of these studies with those from the UN and those produced under government sponsorship and, in particular, to identify what new insights the peace research and other studies have been able to provide.
