Abstract

It is a great pleasure for me to act as chairman of this interesting conference which brings together over twenty outstanding economists and experts from ten different countries. On behalf of all participants I should like to express my thanks to the Rockefeller Foundation for the kind invitation to use the magnificent facilities of its Study and Conference Center at Bellagio. We have here scholars from three European CMEA member countries, from a non-aligned socialist country, from the USA, from three European countries that are members of the European Communities, and lastly, from two neutral European market economies. This seems to be suitable territorial mix for discussing the complex problem of the so-called ‘dual attachment’ to both East and West.
