Abstract

Banking in the Gulf states has always had a strong external orientation since its inception, reflecting the extremely open nature of the economies themselves. Trading and financial links with the outside world are of paramount importance for the Gulf given the resource endowment of the region. The banks in the Gulf naturally aim to service these flows, which generate a major part of their business.
