Abstract

In recent years, there has been a trend toward expansion of powers (product offerings) for banks in the United States. Indeed, the distinction between previously segmented commercial banks and savings institutions (savings and loan associations, savings banks, and credit unions) has largely disappeared, especially for household customers. Moreover, banks (including all of the previously segmented depository financial institutions) have been acquiring powers, such as securities brokerage, and expanding their menu of retail financial services. The trend is clearly towards further liberalisation, with expanded insurance powers being the next likely target.
