Abstract

Throughout its first two decades the internal organisation of North Thames Gas remained fundamentally unaltered (see Figure 7.1). Commercial activities continued to be concentrated in the territorial Divisions, under the overall control of the Commercial Manager. A separate Headquarters Division handled such matters as new housing, public services, lighting, and industrial sales. Production and distribution lay within the orbit of the Chief Engineer, while the Controller of Services looked after transport, meters, and showrooms. The Controller of Supplies was responsible for the purchase and storage of appliances and materials; and the Controller of By-Products controlled the processing and marketing of the materials produced by the two Products Works at Beckton and Southall. There were separate Coal and Coke Managers, who looked after purchases and sales of these materials. Meanwhile, at Chief Office were grouped the Secretarial, Legal, Public Relations, Personnel, Finance, Management Services, and Medical sections, housed in various buildings around Kensington and Fulham.
