Economics as a Public Good

In: Recollections of Eminent Economists

Author

Listed:
  • Herbert Giersch

Abstract

At least two conditions, in the author’s mind, must be met to justify writing an autobiographic essay. The first one is age. With some tolerance, this criterion can be taken to be satisfied at 65. Secondly, there has to be a message worth getting across. After some reflection, the author managed to put into words what he intuitively felt through most of his life: economics is a public good with a potential demand far from saturation. Those willing to augment its supply can expect to earn a good living, and still maintain their self-respect.
