Abstract

After more than eight years of complex and often contentious negotiations, the European Community (EEC), reached, in March 1985, an agreement with Portugal and Spain about their adhesion to the Common Market. Membership became effective on January 1, 1986. From which time onwards the existing mutual tariff and non-tariff barriers are gradually being removed. Thus the Iberian manufacturing industries hold the prospect of getting new outlets for their exports, but also face a rise of import competition which may call for considerable structural adjustment.
