Abstract

Recent years have witnessed considerable debate about the position of developing countries in the world economy. This discussion has touched on a wide range of issues. Amongst them has been the question of the extent to which developing countries were advantaged or disadvantaged under the Bretton Woods system. Following the breakdown of this system in the early 1970s there have been questions relating to the design of a New International Economic Order (NIEO) which might be of more benefit to the developing world, and of ways in which developing countries have been affected by the international financial arrangements that superseded the Bretton Woods system. These questions have frequently been discussed in relation to the notion of a North-South divide.
