Abstract

The industrial sectors of the various GCC countries are increasingly gaining prominence and gradually becoming viable and contributing more to the region’s GDP. During the first half of the 80s the region witnessed a significant numerical growth in manufacturing enterprises. By 1985, according to the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting, there were about 3600 licensed manufacturing enterprises operating in the region, with a total investment of $75 billion. The majority of these enterprises were engaged in import substitution products and depended mostly on imported skills for their operation. Nevertheless, the region remains characterized by excessive reliance on imports to meet consumption needs.
