Abstract

Chile, like all developing countries, needs foreign savings to finance its growth. One way of capturing such funds is to open up the country to foreign capital for the creation of totally or partially foreign-owned enterprises. It is the intent of this paper to describe how this type of investment has worked in Chile over the last ten years, and the impact it has had on the economy. Of course, the process of direct foreign investment cannot be analysed without reference to the laws governing it. Therefore, a brief summary of this legislation will precede comments upon the actual economic aspects.
