Abstract

Reliance on the readily available official statistics in countries is essential as a basis for international comparisons. However, it is an unfortunate fact that different countries do tend to compile labour market information under their own national conventions which means that when they are used for international comparisons the data may be strictly incomparable. This is particularly true of unemployment statistics in general and their derivative, statistics of the duration of unemployment in particular since these are the prime concern of this book. Therefore, in order to be in a sound position to understand and interpret comparisons of unemployment duration data, some knowledge of the differences arising from the use of different measurement systems becomes a prerequisite.
