Abstract

This chapter draws upon the existing literature and data on the role of transnational corporations (TNCs) and of foreign investment generally in food processing in developing countries, to discuss the main issues which arise for these countries in terms of the transfer of technology by foreign firms. We shall undertake an examination of the extent and nature of foreign investment in this industry, using data published by the two leading investor countries (the United States and the United Kingdom), on the large firms which dominate it internationally and by the leading food processing transnational, Unilever. This examination will, it is hoped, permit us a clearer understanding of the effects that the transfer of foreign technology and the entry of large transnational firms might have on various aspects of economic life in developing host countries.
