Abstract

H. S. Marsh Ltd gained the Queen’s Award for the design and construction of a plant for the sterilisation of medical equipment by gamma radiation. The firm designed the world’s first commercial irradiation plant for the sterilisation of disposable plastic syringes which was commissioned in 1962 for Johnson’s Ethical Plastics Ltd in Slough. This was three months before the commissioning of the irradiation plant for medical sutures, designed by Nuclear Chemical Plant Ltd, for Ethicon Ltd in Edinburgh, who also received a Queen’s Award for innovation in sterilisation of surgical materials by irradiation.
