Abstract

This book attempts to analyse the role of foreign firms (MNCs and non-MNCs) in technology transfer and employment generation in the four major industries (textiles, garments, plastics and toys, and electronics) of Hong Kong. Special attention is directed to the differences in behaviour and characteristics between foreign and local firms. This study is largely based on data collected from a special survey of firms. The sample includes 529 firms and a response rate of 70 per cent has been obtained. In view of the fact that Hong Kong has become the developing economy which makes the largest foreign direct investment, a chapter on third world multinationals in general and Hong Kong multinationals in particular is also included in this book. This study is however based on a much smaller sample of twenty-five Hong Kong firms.
