Wicksell and the Malthusian Catastrophe

Abstract

Wicksell is peculiarly relevant to the agonising reappraisal, now going on, about economic growth. After 200 years of fitful but persistent growth, grave doubts have arisen about its implications for the future. The people want it; politicians preach it and try to practise it; economists could think of nothing else for the last couple of decades. Until the oil crisis, the future apparently worried no one.
