Abstract

Since the war Belgium has adopted an international stance on economic matters, partly because of its geography and size but also for more positive reasons. It has attempted to become the headquarters of significant international organisations, of which the outstanding example is the EEC, but it also attracted NATO when it left France. As a small country it has the advantage of being a compromise choice between more powerful rivals.
