The Lower Foundry

Abstract

The third study concerns a very different system—the Lower Foundry—which employed comparable numbers of people (varying between 100 and 180) to the Finishing Shop, but had a fairly heavy technology based on melting and casting of alloy. The working conditions were naturally characterised by heat, dirt and oil, but a considerable amount of highly mechanised equipment was employed and the disposition and activity patterns of employees in one-half of the foundry at least were quite closely constrained by the nature of the process and the plant.
