Abstract

These negotiations were a landmark in the formation of the common personality of the European Economic Community, which for the first time presented a united front in international negotiations. Much of the credit for ironing out the conflicting economic interests of the Six member states must go to the Commission. At a strict negotiating level much weight fell upon the shoulders of M. Jean Rey, who at times negotiated almost alone of behalf of the Community.
