International shipping cartels

Abstract

Two types of organisation come within the terms of reference of the title. The first of these is the company which controls all the shipping services over an international route. The second is the organisation established by a group of nominally competing lines in order to determine the conditions of their competition. With both types of organisation the international aspects may arise from the nationality of the ship engaged in the services or from the service itself. In practice, however, it is the situation where ships of different nationalities are involved which is important and it is only that situation which is considered here.
